Thread: ID This Fish

just did a bit of reading on warmouth , seems they can hybridize across the board !
one information source said largemouth , black crappie and all the other sunfish species can hybridize with them !
and NONE mentioned blue streaks in the gill plates as a feature of identification on a the pure warmouth .
the red dot on the rear dorsal fin that is commonly seen in the spring indicates its a male fish.
as well a bright red eyes during the spawn ....said they reached spawn capability at 3 to 4 inches long
and 3 spines on the anal fin says it isn't a rock bass

Interesting fish to say the least.

Thanks for the info from all. I've never seen or caught one of these in this geographic location. I need to do some research to see how common they are in these parts.

The Green Sunfish in middle Tennessee have a goldish kind of fin boundary i do not see in this fish but my vote is Greenie!

Those are some pretty fish. The Warmouth I'm used to catching are a welcome catch but are not too pretty..

the larger fish here often get really dark in some spots and in others they stay all tiger looking like the little fish in the image I posted , in some spots they get a purplish hue to them also .
the variance on coloration on them is often times quite different , my wife caught ones years ago that was huge and just almost solid gold with about zero markings on it .
pretty neat fish for sure , wish there were larger numbers of them here , but we don't see many in any one spot and if you ketch 2 in the same day that is pretty unusual here .
in my reading on them it says they are loners in the sunfish world for the most part .

No idea what it is,
however I learned something snd really enjoyed the post!
