Default Presentation similar to that used for bass in the pads

Pad edges and pad pockets were hit & miss - mostly few strikes. But then I remembered a technique I used for bass that involved a weedless lure run across the pads and allowed to pause near openings. In the case of panfish, I worked a jig & grub on top of pads and 3' from the edge and then allowed the lure to drop over the edge in open water. Dang if the fish didn't came out from under the pads and smack the lure!
The jig is not weedless so I had to work it a bit faster than a weedless bass lure.
Remedy that might work: make small jigs weedless.

I have caught fish on weedless jigs in the past but usually on jigs with larger hooks. I had some thin wire sitting around and attached a wire weed guard that depresses pretty easy but not to much on this #6 hook:

Should be interesting to see how many fish are hooked and whether this will do okay near pad edges.

I’m curious to see as well for I think a jig with weed guard would benefit me during time of year where ponds all covered in undergrowth….

Don't they make an offset jighead. Like a weedless worm hook? A longshank lite wire hook could be bent into a Texas rigged worm shape. A light bullet weight. Be like a miniature bass set up.

Size: 139.3 KB this type of pad bed is the kind of place I like to fish for Brim, shell crackers and specks/crappie. I do lose a few hooks at times. Every time I try to work a jig I seem to get hung up and broke off.. I use 6lb Yozuri hybrid and 6lb camo line from Mr Crappie 95% of the time and 8lb flurocarbon the other times. I typically use a 10ft "cane pole" most of the time in the pads. If water is 7 ft I use 8ft of fishing line, no weight or cork. I definitely want to try a weedless jig head. I saw a video where a guy (maybe Richard Gene?) Modified some his way, they looked good to me.

I used to use tru turn hooks when fishing live bait. I could not find any anywhere. Used needle nosed pliers to bend cranks in regular hooks. Works rather well. I grind the knurled part off of the plier jaws to reduce stress risers that would lead to hook breakage.

Size: 87.6 KBThe ones Richard G modify end up looking similar to this one. I buy Truturn hooks in size #6 for panfish and #2 for Speck/Crappie..1/0 and 2/0 for Texas rig Bass fishing, I started using them in the mid 1980s.
