CTPanfisher,
I only have experience with the old style #2 and #3. The #2 is tiny and hits the water very softly. You might also look at the hard foam strike indicators with the rubber tubing to lock line in place. If you get the hard foam ones, they have enough weight to them to cast even flies the distance you are looking for, as long as using ultralite gear. As stated, fly fishing gear would be best. Good luck!
Here is a pic. w/poppers. The plastic float used for longer casts.

Definitely worth a try, CT. I fish really bad rock bottom areas and will be going back to the float technique I used some years ago. I have some of those real small thill ice fishing floats that can be used with regular wet flies. With shotting set it is like fishing shallow water with a fly rod, but easier and faster than my fly rod. You can cover a lot of water from the bank or wading. U/L eliminates a lot of casting issues.

The float worked! I got a bite about every cast, and I messed up setting the hook for most of those, but I still caught 3(2 bluegills and 1 pumpkinseed) ! And 1 of those was 10+ inches and an absolutely huge fish. So I'd call that a success.
