    Default scouting gone wrong

drove by this series of smaller waters a few times over the last 20 years .
told myself I will walk in one day and see if there are crappie in them .
to be sure I still do not know ....
but I do know there are lots of turtles ,snakes and bullheads ,,,,
and at least one bluegill in one of the ponds !
only stayed about 20 or 30 minutes , I typically scout pretty fast
could there be crappie in those ponds ?
I tend to think the larger one probably yes ,but not enough time to hit it well .
just stopped before work and the smaller pond was much closer than the larger one
maybe next time i suppose .....
at least i ketched some fish i suppose ....
fish count was 3 , snake count was one , turtle count was high
water was super shallow across all of pond one where i concentrated my trip
wind was howling and to be sure it was one of those things
pond 2 is pretty large and might be worth another visit
    we shall see .....

Looks like you interrupted those snakes while they was in a private moment

Even the non epic days are fun to hear about. Might be worth one more try!

You only got one, but he’s a pretty one. The legless ones are all yours, what kind were they? Like you, I’ve found some stellar ponds over the years, always have a want list of those I want to get to. If anyone can find out, it will be you.

Just FYI, I’ve carried a .22 revolver with some CCI shot shells in it for the unwanted legless ones. At ten feet the pattern opens to about the size of a basketball and I’ve never seen it take more than one to dispatch an aggressive one. Cottonmouth can be downright mean and once they find out you have fish they might be able to get to they won’t give up. I don’t walk the banks much anymore but it’s always in my pocket when I do.

I wish I could make myself stop and fish out of the way places more. I carry a .38 special with snake dust for legged and unlegged snakes.

I have found I stay out of trouble better if I am not armed most of the time , the temptation to shoot first and ask questions later is eliminated from my list of go to choices that way
my grandpa was a shoot first fella , god rest his soul .
we had a long list of folks he put bullets in for various reasons , he was a hoot to hang with for sure .
any problem was easily solved with either a baseball bat for a slight grievance
to let the lead fly if it was a bit past that ....
he shot his BRAND NEW car full of holes one night from his balcony when he caught a guy trying to steal the radio out of it .
when he took it in to the dealership to have all the holes repaired I was with him and the repair guys had a for sure worried look on their faces .
that and the blood stains on the seat made them have some big ole deer in the headlights faces !
never seen or heard from who took the lead , but i bet they thought hard on the next attempted theft if there was one
