Good fighters. I often mistake them for a big bluegill.

When my kids were toddlers I used bread pinched onto a tiny hook at the city park where people fed bread to ducks.
They flat wore the blue gills out.

I usually get into gold shiners early in the year back in the upper end of my local water reservoir. It’s a big flat back there that warms quicker than the rest of the lake .
They’re usually right up next to the bank .
As you said , good fighters.
