Treble vs. Single
On casting spoons, spinners and lures. Have switched out about a dozen recently and cannot try out due to ice. Before going forward with the rest, I thought I would post this. Would appreciate any info from anyone who has done this.
Change in action?
Barb vs. barbless? (target is sunfish/crappie)
Tipping spoons with 1"tubes, 1" gulp minnow etc. vs. plain single hook?
Leaving front hook off on doubles since sunfish usually hit from behind.?
Change in % of hookups?
I used open eye siwash on some applications which eliminated need for split ring. Eyes and hands don't work as well anymore and #1 rings are low as I can manage. The small rings can be real pain. Here's a pic. of the type of gear I am switching over.

Tipping your Spoons you will need to test... I tried tipping a Z Vibre with a single wax worm and it killed the action of the bait...

Thru the ice I typically swap trebled for singles. Seems to work, and, I believe it helps hookups with multiple species.

Treble vs. Single
No problems leaving front hook off. I only buy spoons....spinners....cranks....with single hooks. I also have micro vibration baits with single hooks. I use some barbless hooks. It comes in handy if your into white bass where you catch on every cast. I do not like the barbless for trout...which strangely enough....is why I bought them. I lose too many fish due to their rolling when hooked. I have several bait types with micro barb hooks...and they work very well. What baits I did own that have trebles I will switch out the hooks to singles. I sure don’t like doing it though. The Japanese hooks I use will bury in you in a micro second.

I've been making my own spinners with single hooks for several years. I don't see much change in hook-ups. A plus for single hooks is an easier release and you just lowered your bottom snagging ability by 2/3.

Yes, I like to stay away from the treble hooks because I feel overall they damage the fish too much. I am a C&R fisher so the faster I can get them in the water the better.

I agree on being very careful, as I am using all Japanese barbed hooks. The open eye siwash hooks are Gamakatsu and the other two are C'ultiva, either spoon or inline hooks. Thanks for the info.
