    Default Smaller is better

    Today anyway.

Went to the “big pond”. Nothin. Used my regular live bait + tried some jigs.

Went to the “medium” pond where I rarely attend.

Eight fish in 45 min. Used a tiny worm, and caught tiny fish.

I did try to use a jig and a top water on a second rod in an attempt to lose my lure virginity. Not even a glance. I will say that most of the time I’d put down the live bait rod, pick up my jig rod, and already have a bite.

I’ve decided I’m just not feeling the Micro Series and will probably go back to the Lew’s. Name: IMG_0727.jpg

Great pictures. Don't be afraid to down size the hook even more. Maybe even try to find some lighter wire hooks. Those hooks look strong enough to catch big cats. And trim the tag end closer to the hook.

Right after I read this I was going to grab some smaller hooks, but you just made me think. These ponds are very diverse, although I am usually targeting the bluegill it is not completely uncommon to catch a decent sized catfish. Almost makes me think I should stick with this hook? However there are times that I’m getting some action on the bobberName: IMG_0571.jpg

I fish with small hooks all the time.....I’m after bluegill....crappie.....Spotted bass....Smallmouth. I use small hooks because I don’t want to miss any bluegill. But I catch a lot of big fish on small hooks with no issues. This one came on a #8 hook. I get into these and catfish all the time. Small hooks can handle a lot more than bluegill. You may want to give them a try.

    Regards

I think these are a six? I’ll have to look. I’m not opposed to trying anything. I do feel like maybe I’ve gotten more gut hooks with eights?

Six is good. Yeah sometimes you get gut hooks with smaller hooks.

    I got my biggest brown trout (a 4-pounder) on a #20 hook.

Don't be afraid try jig head hook also maybe start with a 1/16 oz. They are harder for a fish to swallow. A smaller lite wire will give quicker deeper penetration in the roof of the mouth. I great bait to give you confidence would be a "keystone minnow". They are so small and so deadly. Also try taking half of night crawler and run the hook through the tip of the worm and fish it with it just dangling.

The pop-R can be a knockout at the right time. First hour or two and last hour or two of the day is when they work best. Changing the retrieve is key, as is the length of time that you pause in between pops. Don’t give up on em yet. I also agree, clean up the knot. Lots of good ones and if what you’re using isn’t coming undone, keep using it and trim the tag end down to an eighth or so. Best thing I can say is that you’re paying attention to what differences have what results, that makes a big difference. Keep after it, you’ll figure it out.
