Thread: Not even a nibble

What were you using? Someitmes when I get like that it is just a matter of swiching baits/presentaiton. The other day I was on the potomac and was just getting no luck on my jigs and as soon as I swiched to live worms BOOM! Caught a good amount. weird how it works like that sometimes

Had a similar experience earlier today. Went to the local sunfish haunt in the early afternoon and fished from the bank for a couple of hours. It was an uncharacteristically slow but very sunny day, so I was able to watch the fish interact with my bait. This was a rare treat, given that most of the waters here are very tannic and stained. There were three decent shellcracker patrolling up and down the bank together, and no matter how many times I skipped a worm into their path, they wouldn't fall for it. They'd all gather around it, stare for a few seconds, then continue gliding on their way. Same story with trout magnets, honey worms, and jigs. Finally out of desperation I slipped a crappie nibble onto the hook and provoked the bite from a runt. For reference, I pulled 6 eaters from the same spot the preceding day on red wigglers and have hooked dozens there over the past week. Some days they just ain't buying what we're selling.

Same as always - a worm, a split shot, and a lighted bobber. I usually go out around 9:00, and get an hour or so in before bed. I did try a Powerbait in the "small fish" corner where my daughter fishes for a short period as well.

I did experiment with depth, as well as casted to a few different places.

Open to feedback, I have to assume this is related to the cooler temperatures. Was right around 70 last night.

Typically catch between 5 - 10 fish in a night.

Did you let it sit on the bottom? That's often where the fish are.

Don't know anything about night fishing for sunfish types as I've never tried it. However, in the fall I have to increase my depth when fishing with a bobber. Usually I have to move out from the 3 - 6 foot depths I fish most of the spring and summer into nearby 5 - 8 foot depths. Bobber setting goes from 2 - 4 feet to 4 - 6 feet. That is usually the only adjustment I need to find the same fish I've been on earlier in the year. When it gets really cold I don't do any bobber fishing and just work jigs along the bottom from 8 - 15 feet deep.

I have not, I almost always use a bobber.

Is it as simple as removing the bobber and having the worm sit off the bottom? I assume that does make it a little harder to detect a bite given that there is no bobber to provide clear indication.

That’s what I usually use so if I’m not using jigs. It is that simple! (I usually add a small splitshot weight). I try and keep the line taught so I can feel the bites on my rod, and I use a UL rod with a fast tip.
