Default Trying an idea with Trout Magnet

I知 going to try (for me) an experiment with my fly rod. I dug out some Mustad size 8 2X streamer/nymph hooks from deep storage with my fly tying stuff. The length looks perfect for the TM. I believe guys have said that a TM is about 1/64 by itself. I知 thinking it should cast easily with my 3 Weight rod. Target water is a shallow warm water stream. The deepest water right now isn稚 much more than 6 feet or so, all rocky bottom. I should get an excellent slow water drop that should help with hang ups. Anyone try this? It should be a fun experiment.

Yes, I seen a video on YouTube of a guy that did that with 1" Gulp minnows, it worked good.

A lot of guys do this and it proves very successful. A friend of mine recently returned for a 3 month long trout fishing trip in Colorado. In 90 days old Ed caught 1300 trout using the TM....most were on spinning gear but a lot were on the setup you just described. Works great on panfish also.

There was a guy on FAOL (Fly Anglers Online) who did this. This was before the TM hit the market, so he used little 1" Mr. Twisters. He said it was beyond deadly for bluegills. I'm sure the TM would work, too.

With the cost of flies, it can't hurt to try!

DB4D, as the old saying goes “the operation was a success but the patient died”! The TM worked perfectly, and with my best spinning rod I will try it next season with just the TM on a plain hook. There were no takers with it this PM, but I did manage a couple pans with a chartreuse popper. I think the message I’m gettin Is “we’re done”! A very nice afternoon though!

The guy on FAOL used a #10 hook and added a bead head for weight. I'd rather use a really light jig head, like 1/100 oz.

Good ideas. A light jig head sounds like a good way to go.

Bob these balanced bead heads have a barb made from the pin that holds the bead. The middle one has a Berkley Power Wiggler on it. It could be a plastic bait just as easily. The little barb holds bait on well. These are #12's and weigh 1/100oz.

Take a peep at the Mini Magnets.
