Title says most of it. I usually use trout magnets and / or worms under a bobber.

If you can cover a lot of water by moving along the bank or cast from an area known for its accessibility to fish (pond), no lure or bait is going to catch fish. Baits only find fish that are present. Now if you're are asking if the set up your using catches fish in general, you'd be right to use them but only if the line under the float put the bait at the right depth. Finding out the depth is just a matter of casting a 1/8 jig head and counting down until it reaches the bottom. Good luck.

the one or 2 or 3 spots I frequent for river bluegill have somewhat similar patterns . Spawning areas that are visible from the bank and proximity to them . I also "sight" fish them as many times they in numbers along the shoreline in some spots .
come winter i leave the river fish alone as they get hard to find .

Your last statement hits the nail square on. It’s like they literally disappear into the bottom somewhere. You can walk the stream as much as you want and NOBODY in sight.

If you're using a float cast downstream, not upstream. If you cast downstream, you can control the speed of the drift by touching the spool with your finger.

No. If you're just casting a jig or a crankbait or whatever, it moves independently from the current. Unchecked, a float will always travel at the same speed as the surface current.

Make less casts all over the river and make more casts in better locations. Look for slower moving water off to the sides of the main current. Look for eddys and areas that are protected by big rocks.
