I wasn't trying to ketch a bluegill but I did get a peck peck peck on my jig down deep and I rose my jig to the surface to move away from the pecky little thing and it raced up behind my jig and HAMMERED it right before I took it out of the water !
I cant remember ever seeing a bluegill attack that fast or hard , man did it come after it like a bass .
    that's all …..

I try to remember to fish the jig to the surface. Had many a fish do what yours did except I pulled it out about the time he hit at it. Nothing but air
    Glad you gott him.

I had the exact same thing happen to me this weekend, except as Ray said it was nothing but air on my end! That's a pretty fish.

I've actually had one jump slightly out of the water while hitting a buzz bait for bass. I caught it hooked in the mouth, and it was about an 8" one. Unfortunately it didn't give much of a fight on bait-casting gear with 10 lb. test . I don't recall ever getting a get vicious attack while pulling the jig from the water from a sizable brim, just the occasional 2 - 4 inch little guys that hang right next to the bank whacking the tail.

I don't know the exact name of that species but from my part of the world they're called tight eyes and they do put up a great fight....

I think we’ve all been short lined, not much that’s more exciting.

Before I was married, my brother and I fished a little lake we called harbor East. Good bass fishing but no monsters that we ever found. Hot as blazes and no wind. I was watching this dragonfly buzz around about 18” or so above the surface, things were slow. All of a sudden this bass about 2 lbs jumps clean out of the water, pops that dragonfly, and falls back in. My mouth hanging wide open I ask my brother if he saw that. He said “see what”? Fish do some of the coolest things, sometimes there’s even a witness, sometimes not.
