It is a price thing. Cardboard tubes the length for that rod are expensive. When I give a rod away I just eat the cost and buy heavy duty PVC and send it Priority Mail....or if I have just gotten a rod out of Japan I will use the heavy duty cardboard tube they sent it in and save some money. I know from talking with the guys at the post office Japanese card board tubes have a great reputation for their strength....LOL. I’ve scoured the internet looking for tubes that are cheap but as of yet have not found any. Someone on main forum suggested to go to a flooring store and ask for some of the tubes the carpet or vinyl come on.....haven’t tried that yet. I’m not sure Trout Magnet will keep selling the TSS rod since they teamed with B’n’M on the TCB rod.

That's a bummer when you see the delivery has arrived and then find out it didn't survive the trip. Hope the next one arrives happy. I was waiting for a rod to arrive too - it shipped 6 days ago and I was getting anxious, but it arrived today and appears to be in good order.

Sorry to see the rod broken, but glad to see it’s being made right.

About the tubes, I agree with Alphahawk on some of what he said. The tubes some manufacturers use for their shipping are great but cardboard is not all the same. For the weight that some of them carry, pvc might be a better choice. Carpet tubes cardboard isn’t as dense or hard enough that I would ever consider using one. Their job is to maintain a hole that a pole lift can enter the roll, not lineal strength. I laid rug and worked in the carpet warehouse before that and while some are good, it doesn’t take much to crush or break them.

To my thinking, PVC is a better choice. It also isn’t created equal. It comes in different wall thickness also, referred to in schedule ratings. Most common is schedule 40 for household plumbing and such. Lawn sprinkler guys use schedule 20 which is a thinner wall version and uses different fittings. The weight of this is much lighter and may be worth a look if you have rods to ship. Bought in bulk as in Jeff’s case, This might be a cheaper option. If you want one that you can drive over, look up some schedule 80. That stuff is just super tough.

I packed up a reloading press a few years ago to be shipped out. I cut cardboard to nest the press in the box. Double boxed it and taped it shut with fiber reinforced tape.. Took it to the Post Office it weighed just under 50 pounds if I remember right. I paid my shipping charges. The fellow picked up the box turns and throws it towards the canvas cart packages go in. It landed short and hit the floor. He walked over grabbed it up and tossed it into the cart. Kind of upsetting to pay all that money for shipping just to have what is being sent carelessly abused.

Happens all too often. Anything heavy must be double boxed. The inner box should float on peanuts or foam, no direct contact with the outside box. You did it right.

The next level up is a crate.

So sad for you, Amazon does the same thing, they use a shabby 4 sided box and just drop the rod in it. So far, I have been lucky.

Guess there isn't any pride, in the work people do nowadays. But maybe it's because, all the managers want, is numbers over excellence.

My concern was for what the press had landed on in the tote.
