Default I need a new UL Reel

I have fished two Diawa Tournament Whisker SS 700 reels for the last 20 years. I love them even thou they do not have the infinite anti reverse. Well earlier tis year one went overboard. I recently bought one off Ebay to replace it but ended up sending it back. Did not have the original handle and looked like it was not taken care of very well.

I guess its time to move on to a new model. I need it to cast far with light lures and not create line twist. That was the nice thing I liked about the SS 700. The way it wrapped the line during the retrieve prevented loops.

So what do you think. I'd like to keep it at $200.00 or under. By the way most of my pan fishing is from the shore. Especially since I need to replace the rod.

I do not believe you have to spend that much for crappie or bluegill, unless you truly want to. I've been fishing for them for many decades and I sincerely believe you'll be hard pressed to find a better reel than a Pflueger President series in the size you need. The price point is quite a bit lower than your expectations. They are excellent UL reels, especially the #20 size. Very smooth drag and tough as nails. And yes, they do feature infinite anti-reverse. I have 5 of them now and wouldn't trade them for anything out there. JMO!

Hard to beat the Pfleuger Presidents for 1/3 the cost. They make a higher end than the President, but I find no fault with that mode!. The 6925 model is my favorite UL. I have about 5 different sizes and all are great reels.

Not up to me to tell you how much to spend....or not spend on a reel. But if your budget is at the $200 mark take a look at the Daiwa Ballistic FWLT 1000S-P. The link is to an eBay seller that I bought 6 from. Right now he is out of stock. But he could get more any day. This particular seller has sold 17 of these reels and I’m pretty sure all 17 were sold to crappie.com members....some got them at $198. The reel has excellent line lay....low inertia.....2 ball bearings in the line roller alone...total of 8 ball bearings. Many of us added 4 more bearings for a total of 12. Weight of reel is only 5.5 ounces. When you crank the handle feels like you are turning air.....it’s that good.

    Regards

Since you like the SS 700 so well, why not buy another?
Fish USA has them for 104.99.
The have changed little over the past 30 years.

I read a lot about the diawa regal line of spinning reels and finely pulled the triger and bought 1 of e-bay for $50 delivered. Had it out 5 times now, impressive for the $$$. It was the

The Ballistic has been on my short list and is a serious consideration. I have also thought about buying the Thailand made SS 700 but have not seen one or seen a review comparing the two. I have seen on some forums that they do not like the quality who knows. JDM reels and rods sure get more praise here.

Is the Ballistic a shallow spool or can it be bought with a standard also.

I also love the SS 700. Solid, dependable construction, and really dig the old school look and feel. Like mentioned already, just get another! Amazon has them, as well as other retailers like TackleDirect. One of VERY few reels that is still being made, virtually unchanged, for probably close to 30 years. That alone says SOMETHING.
