Actually Skeet, if you look closely, that warmouth does show diagonal stripes from eye. Some fish species, including warmouth, don't necessarily show vivid markings. I now find after catching dozens in the last 10 days, is the increased size of their mouth and the body shaped more like a bass = Warmouth bass. Many of the ones I recently inspected, showed no "war paint"! What they lack in overall size is easily made up with attitude and excellent eating!Attachment 370750Attachment 370751Attachment 370752Attachment 370753
The spotted sunfish(stumpknockers) are the tinier ones with black pepper flecks all over also great to eat. Even hear a rumor a few days ago that they are being erroneously served as Grouper cheeks, probably cookie cutter round cut.:dono

The. I stand corrected. Whichever it was, he was tasty. There are some days that the lions share of fish caught are Warmouth, and then might not see any for a little while. They’re some kinda fun.
Warmouth are odd sunfish in these parts , some days like Skeet says you ketch a few and then other times you don't see one for months .
One thing I know factually is these here warmouths in my area vary a lot in coloration and mean a bunch .
my wife ketched one that was real big and it had zero markings on it for the most part and very pale .
I ketched one about 75 miles away that was real big and was almost black and had definitive speckling .
then I get one about 30 miles from there that is bronze with tiger with bars all over it like a smallmouth cross .
I even seen a few from one lake here that have a slight purplish hue to them.
I think they have the camo thing going on strong kinda like a chameleon maybe , change coloration as the mood or need comes into the play ?
