    Default XUL vs SUL

What is the difference between XUL and SUL fishing rods? I can’t find a source that describes the difference. Is it just different ways to describe a rod action less than UL? Some manufactures seem to use both terms on different rods. Thanks.

I’ve been looking for several years and can not find it. So I ordered 2 SUL and 1 XUL. As far as I can tell an XUL is softer through the butt.....on my Palms Egeria anyway. Major Craft at one time sold XUL and SUL. Palms only has XUL and now Major Craft has done away with the XUL rating. I have seen some rods that have an XXUL rating. Hope to get an XXUL someday. Either rating you get you are fixing to have some fun....LOL.

First off, I don't think there is an industry standard, so different rod companies may use the terms slightly differently.
As an example, though, the Shimano World Shaula Technical Edition has 6'2" rods in XUL, SUL, UL and L.

The recommended lure and line ratings are as follows:
Mode Lure (g) Line (nylon lb) Line (PE line size)
    XUL .4 - 3.5 1 - 3 .2 - .6
    SUL .6 - 6 1.5 - 4 .2 - .6
    UL .7 - 8 1.5 - 6 .2 - .6
    L 1.5 - 10 2 - 7 .3 - .8

Good thread! Now.....are there any XUL's out there that are not high end St. Croix's or Loomis brands? Never seen this kind of rating for any B n' M rods or similar rods in that price range.

Never seen any US market brand of rod that have XUL or SUL ratings in any price range. There are plenty of Japanese rod companies that build XUL....SUL...and XXUL rods. I can tell you fishing an XUL or SUL rod is off the charts fun.

The only rods I can remember were the old Mitchell Zero Gravity rods. They came out in the 90's, I believe, and sold for around $50. A similar but cheaper option was the Quantum Xtralite series. They also came out in the early to mid 90's.

I'm not saying either of these were the same quality or action of a Japanese XUL or SUL, but both were attempts to make UL rods lighter than anything else on the US market.
