    Default Green Sunfish orange version

Friday I fished Cheney Reservoir "20 miles West of Wichita Ks" and jigged for crappie in a few spots and caught none. Decided to try for gills so ended up with 10 gills around 7" and 8". On the same pink/white trout magnet also caught a 3 lb drum, skinny bass, two 5.5" green sunfish. The greenies had bright orange fins and tails and not the usual yellow. I've caught 100's of greenies but never this orange version - is this common?Name: 20190823_200337.jpg

Yes it's fairly common. Also, your first pic is a green sunfish while your second pic is a green x bluegill hybrid. The orange or usually yellow on the fins is way more prominent on the hybrids.

I caught several hybrids Friday - the 2 greenies were both 5.5" and may have been the same fish?

I think the orange trim on Geen Sunfish might be spawning colors. I notice a lot more orange in the summer than the rest of the year.

Think they get a brighter orange - during spawning - here in SoCal.

I have friends with a pond full of greenie/gill hybrids. They are super agressive and fun to catch. Thanks for the report!
