This year the sunfish spawn seemed a little off on my home lake in Central Arkansas. I found some fish on beds in May but not in great abundance. Then the Arkansas River has a historic flood that backed up a creek so much that it flowed over the backside of Lake Conway’s dam and into the lake. This caused a near history flood (5 feet high) for an extended period of time. I know 5 feet doesn’t sound like much, but 5 feet is a huge deal in this lake. Additionally we drew the lake down a foot to delay the rise of flood water in the lake. We were finally able to evacuate all of the excess flood water and what do you know, I can visually see bluegill beds in some of my favorite spots. Some of the beds are in less than 4 inches of water. I was really concerned about the 1 foot drawdown and then a huge flood messing up this year’s spawn, but I think I may have been wrong. I’m guessing that the conditions were finally right during the flood and they really started making beds. Nothing huge but some decent fish that make my light drag sing. I need to take a day off now and see what else I can find.

Nice Gills, the one in the bottom picture has some girth. I hope to get out in between rain showers some time this week, need to feel the pull and hear the drag sing.

So far so good. Now would be a good time to get after the bluegill on Conway. Just save a few for me to catch!

Those are some nice fish. The first one is what I get a lot of, and just about the same size. Good trip.
