Default Book on bluegill biology and behavior

Here is the definitive book on Bluegill Biology and Behavior. I read it about a decade ago and plan on reading again soon in the evenings. I will let y’all know what the “experts” say about the bluegill spawn in a week or so after I reread the book. I have included a picture of the cover and citation page just in case someone wants to order it. Actually if you want this book, I am a member of the American Fisheries Society (professional society of fisheries biologists) and I can get the book at a discounted price. If interested let me know. The cost would be about $30 depending on shipping. Or if someone has any interesting trade bait, we might be able to work out a deal. Let me know.

D10, the name on this end is Tim. I’m very interested in the book and would order one in a second and forward the money to you. The question that is strong in my mind is this; am I going to be able to understand it? I’m fairly educated and such but I have tried to read some things in the past that went right over my head and never did land. If it can be understood by most folks, I’m all in. These little fish, well....little to most of us except Sonny, have had my interest for a long time and like everyone else here, I need to learn all I can to be better at the sport. Looking forward to your answer with money in hand. Thanks.

Tim - My name is Matt. Let me look over it a little bit tonight and get back to you. From what I remember there are some complex chapters and others that are pretty straight forward. I’ll get back with you with what I think.

American Fisheries and Barnes and Noble have this book listed for $35. I am interested in what is in the book. You can just download the book as a pdf on the American Fisheries site.

In the introduction it does say the intended audience are biologists. I did a quick read through a couple of chapters and it does have some more advanced and technical information in it. I still think that the average angler would still get some good info out of it. There is a chapter on Reproduction that is good. It explains the spawn really well.

L4S - that’s it. Normally $35 though American Fisheries Society. I didn’t realize they also offered a digital copy. If anyone is still interested in a paper back copy, I get a discount. Total cost would probably be around $30 to 35 shipped. Not much cheaper than the digital copy.

I’m not sure of the legalities of scanning a chapter of the book for others to read. Is this legal?

    Bluegills Biology and Behavior

By Stephen Spotte. Bethesda (Maryland): American Fisheries Society, f35.00 (paper), vii -t- 214 p.; ill.; index. ISBN: 978-1-888569-93-3. 2007.

This paperback book provides an overview of published literature related to selected aspects of bluegill biology and behavior, including chapters on movement, sensory perception, foraging, competition, predation, reproduction, development, growth, mortality, and management. The volume is not intended to be a complete reference on bluegills, but could serve as a literature reference for graduate students initiating field or laboratory investigations, researchers, or fisheries managers. Details of selected studies and experiments are included, rather than simple synopses of findings. The use of endnotes is somewhat cumbersome, but the reference list is extensive.
The author correctly cautioned against extrapolating results from laboratory experiments to natural systems. However, throughout the text, Spotte presents results from case studies on single natural lakes, or on a few natural lakes in one region, in a writing style that suggests the findings were true for all North American lakes that contain bluegill. Study limitations related to scope were sometimes glossed over, which will require readers to seek out the information from the full citation, following the trail from endnotes to references. Moreover, the supposition that correlating environmental factors with growth for the purpose of managing fisheries offers little information of "practical use" (p. 128) fails to acknowledge the spatial scale to which management of bluegill fisheries often occurs. For upper midwest states such as Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, where bluegill are ubiquitous and lakes number in the thousands, single lake assessment a n d management may n o t be practical or possible. Studies that seek to explain spatial variation in bluegill population demographics through lake classification using temporally stable correlates offer a framework for understanding the underlying dynamic processes that occur at local levels.
