very nice fish. Great post
I do have days when the fish do not want the spinner or there are a couple lakes around me where the fish just seem to not go for the black Beetle with the spinner on it. I guess it is a little too much flash for them. I just take it off and fish the black beetle by itself. Usually they will jump on one or the other. Got into some shell crackers last year by switching from the spinner to the plain beetle. The fish were hitting the spinner but I couldn't get them on the hook. Took the spinner off and it was on.

very nice fish. Great post
Makes sense about them hitting the spinner sometimes and not the hook. I do like how the design of the spin make it mostly weedless and it just hops over cover. The beetle bodies are just the right size for all kinds of fish to inhale. It is truly a great classic lure. Thanks again for sharing about your trip and hope you get on the fish again soon.

So is there a big difference between the beetle spin and the road runner - - - other than one has jig on top and other has jig under?

Another option is the "whirly bee". It's just a different way of adding a spinner blade to a jig.
Whirly Bee
Personally, I prefer a plain jig. I very rarely add a blade.
Now that I think about it other than extra flash of the blade I think it’s the speed of retrieve that the fish want. When they want a steady medium to fast retrieve the blade on a spin or road runner require you reel a certain speed to keep it moving. On the other hand a plain jig can be worked as slow as you want.
