    I'm sure this is a stupid question but, how do you know those are blue gills? Never seen one like them before!

    They're definitely bluegills. They're not all colored alike. This coloration is pretty typical for Florida gills like these.

    Hey Don, no such thing as a dumb question around here. The splash of copper above the eyes gives them their name. The dark color comes from the tannic acid in the water which looks a lot like a dark iced tea. Some fish color up in response to it while others seem to be unaffected. If you look at the ones Ledhed catches in CA you’ll see some similarities and differences between the two locations a few thousand miles apart.
