They're both good baits. Mealies will keep a lot longer in the fridge.
for Bluegill id think the wax would be more juicy softer and slide onto a hook better but they are about half the size or so it seems meal worms seem to be bigger but a bit harder and maybe not as juicy idk though
which do you have more success with?
Since I raise mealworms, naturally I prefer mealworms.I suspect wax worms would be better, soft and juicy, but I’ve never noticed a bluegill turning down a mealworm.Mealworms do have advantages over wax worms, mealworms are much hardier, and mealworms are simple to raise.
Meal worms are harmless in every state of life cycle,Wax worms turn into wax moths, wax moths are devastating to bee colony’s,so if you do go the wax worm route,be sure to destroy any you do not use rather than taking a chance on releasing them into the wild.
I prefer wax. But I prefer maggots over all theses.
In reverse for ease or care.
Meal is easier, then wax, then maggots have to be kept at cold temps or they pupate quick into shells. But they also require no feeding.
I don’t feed my waxworms either. But keep the cool.
