Default JDM lines relating to panfish

    Alphahawk
I enjoyed your new video on the JDM rods and equipment.
I had some questions about the poly line.
How does it seem to be holding up to abrasion and wear compaired to the SOS mono?
What knot are you using with the poly? Any difficulties in slipage with the knot?
Finally, can you project a life span of the poly compaired to the mono? How often did you respool when using the mono?
    Whew...

    Thanks

BTW ... Don't let the B******* on Youtube get you down. Info such as yours is needed and appreciated.

Thanks much for your comments and support. The line is holding up well. When using SOS I would re-spool every week if fishing 3-5 days a week. That was totally unnecessary but I have a 20,000 yard spool of the stuff so I did it. Of course I will not do that with the ester line. I have been using it for about 5 months now on one reel. I plan on keeping it on that particular reel until I think it needs changing or I need to re-spool because the line gets so low on the spool from cutting and re-tying. The knot I used to tie the leader on is a triple overhand...a surgeons knot. I have never had any issues with that knot. I gave this line a good workout with spotted bass...many at the 14-16 inch mark and a couple at the 17 inch mark. The knot...line.....all performed well. In my opinion I think the ester line will have a better life span than nylon mono. As for abrasion resistance I think it is as good as nylon mono. When catching those spots next to the mooring cell a couple for them rubbed the line against the concrete cell...the line held. A couple of times I had a fish hang me in some wood and was able to get them out. Of course with a diameter of .104mm this stuff is pretty thin. All in all I love it. As long as the line is spooled on correctly to avoid line twist....and make sure to not fill the spool as high as you would with mono.....it works out great. My son...and nephew, are now using this line and they love it. The issues I am working out is the no stretch and the drag settings. I am still on the learning curve as far as fishing this line. For many years I would check my drag with a pull scale but it quit working long ago. I am very experienced with setting the drag using the SOS line as I have been doing that for around 10 years. This morning I have been using actual weights to get the drag set at 20-25 percent of the line breaking strength. At 20 percent...with a big bend in the rod the drag slips at 6.25 ounces. At 25 percent it would slip at 8 ounces. I prefer the 20 percent setting because I am using a leader. Now I have decided to get a drag checker out of Japan where I can do a simple check each time I fish without using weights. It is made by Bouz. Leave it to the Japanese to make something quality....easy to use by yourself. I have always wanted to test the actual breaking strength of line I use....the NanoFil...SOS...and now the Japanese lines. This tool will let me do that and also test breaking strength of different knots. Right now I am onto the crappie big time and this line shines for catching them. It is also great for Gills. But the white bass will be moving in anytime now down at Nickajack and I will be chasing them. I will try this line out on them but I am not sure this line will work out for them. I will continue to try new rods and will step up to at least one flagship reel just to see how it is. As I think it was In-Fishermen that said “So many fish, so little time”.

Soon as it gets here I’ll get one done. I ordered the DC 2001 1KG model. I will be able to test line strength....knot strength, plus set drag exactly where I want it. I noticed fishing Saturday morning that my drag had changed when I got on the water. I had set it at 8 ounces of drag in my house. On the water it was 20 degrees. I never really thought about the cold and or heat changing the drag......but the cold had increased the drag. Would have been nice to had the drag checker with me instead of guesstimating.

I’m going to give you some advice that was pointed out to me by Chris at Finesse Fishing. Those rods are built for certain lines. You will get much better performance out of some real 2# test line...meaning something in the .120mm area or lower. I love the SOS line....but I’m sure you know it is really around 3.5# test. I won’t fish SOS on any rod now unless it is rated for 3.5# test or higher. I really like the ester line but it is not for everyone. I have one reel spooled up with some Varivas 2.1# test mono and I tell you it makes a world of difference in sensitivity over the SOS 2# test line. Really looking forward to your feedback on the rod.

Is the Varivas available in the US? If it's not, that's not a deal breaker. I'm just curious.

Well dang....I just scoured Digitaka and can’t find any clear trout line in stock. I just gave away 2 spools of clear Varivas 2.1#. I don’t know how you see it clear...it’s too small for an old mans eyes...LOL.

Not that I’ve been able to find. I think Chris may have some on his site. I usually order 5 spools or so to get my moneys worth with shipping. It’s actually not a bad price...around 8 bucks a spool of 100 meters.

This one looks interesting. 1.41 specific gravity and .109mm diameter for 2.2lb test line. It is clear, probably good for South Houston. I have fished up there several times and man that is a clear lake, very similar to Norris and very tough to fish. I have not tried it, but have a tried an Ester line and did have some manageability issues. Alphahawk May have more insight on this line or brand.

Most esters will be the same. I tried some clear ester the first time I ever used it....from Tict. I couldn’t see it at all. I gave 2 spools of that away also. Ester can have some manageability issues but I love the stuff. But since it has been pointed out to me there is some colored fluorocarbon I am going to give it a try. Caught my first wild trout in the South Holston.
