I tried Gulp Minnows during the spawn and found them wanting. Fish would bite the minnow but not aggressively enough to get hooked. Whatever advantage they give if you tip a jig with them I suspect would be less than just fishing a real minnow alone. I may have continued to play with them but the bottle leaked and they got hard. I could have rehydrated them but frankly I didn't think it was worth the bother. I'm not saying that they don't work, they just didn't work the single time I tried them. They are probably not an alternative to live bait but I understand if you are walking a shore line live bait is a hassle. I also know that not all locations are the same. There are subtle variations in the way fish respond to lures in different lakes and under different conditions. The conditions I tried them under were a sunny day, temperature around 70 F, two foot visibility, green water, water temperature low 60s, early spawn, all black Crappie, mostly males between rocky bank and brush piles in deeper water, upper arm of medium size reservoir.
Tip a 1/64oz jig with a nibble.
