I use the 1 inch sliders to cast and retrieve ,but a slip cork and a pan fish magnet gets these on the tip .
A 1/64oz black jig with a nibble, will catch all you want. If spinning use 4# line with #5 split shot weight 15" above to help with distance. Let fall to bottom and reel just fast enough to keep the bait close to bottom!

Google Black colored Bugs or Black colored Beetles, click on images and look at all the possibilities for food source for our Blue Gilled Friends. My father fly fished for gills while I casted conventional offerings and almost all of his Panfish flies were black or had a black pattern. Surface or sub surface, black shows up well in any water color or depth. Lot more black insects than chartreuse ones. Just an observation, your mileage may vary!
