Does the Tatula come in a shallow spool model in its 100 series? It seems like you can buy an aftermarket shallow spool version but that wouldn't be cost effective when you can purchase a Ballistic 1000 series for roughly the same money.

I bought the tatula in the 2000 series... I use it on my triplecross to throw floats with and only use 2lb sos to float fish... I wanted a little bit larger spool so that is why I went with the 2000... really smooth reel and will be better when my bearing kits come... I hope... I will say I hadn’t used my ballistic much until the other day and I like it a lot as well... bearing kit on the way for it as well...

Did anyone here buy the luvias 1000 from tackle warehouse? I see they are gone, with no backorder listed.

Any experience with double handles on JDM reels (egging style)? Any nuances that might make them less desirable for ultralight fishing? Good balance should only help, but I've never had experience with one.

No experience but I think I’ve read about everything one can read on using them out of Japan. Two things have kept me from trying one.....the cost and weight increase. If it doesn’t work out I would be out about 150 bucks......depending on handle......maybe more.....that I could have put towards a new reel or rod. The theory is you can control your rotation rate much better. The handle is always perfectly balanced and even if the reel is a super low inertia reel such as the Vanquish or the Presso Limited, the double handle will not rotate the reel by its own weight. I have read many blogs by what I call “Master Anglers” that having a double handle reel is a must for finesse fishing. Better control if you will. I ha e watched several anglers use these on YouTube....and they are very popular in Japan. Here is a brief explanation of pros and cons of double handles. Search out and read some blogs on theses....it is quite interesting. By the way....150 bucks is on the cheap side for a double handle.

    Regards

Thanks for the comments, Alphahawk. That link you've provided is the one that'd spurred my interest in the first place. Regarding price, I have a curios situation: I'd very much like to try Daiwa Luvias and am now convinced I'll be getting them for my Blue Current TZ Nano rods. While the ultralight one begs for FC LT2000S (which I'll have to try to catch), my light set up will balance best with LT2500S (not FC), which is only available with double handle for egging (-DH), and price is not that different from LT2500. Seems like a reasonable point for trying out the double handle...

Finally got a tracking number for the vanquish I bought a few weeks ago. It's coming via FedEx and should be here Monday.

I spent four great years living in Japan. They like perfection and are always trying to get things that way. While I do not dispute that thier JDM products are superior a lot of it is over done and over thought out. Plus they are the ultimate followers. What I mean is when one has to have something everyone else has to have the same. When I was there I fished some of there fee lakes. It was really not much different than stocked lakes here in the US. Only exception is they like to catch big fish with light gear. Actually I fished fee lakes in CA that was the same way. When I lived there that was the first time I saw the value of fishing with #2 test line (early 90's). Your bait just has so much more action. Getting back to handles it has been a long time since I fished a double handle on a spinning reel. If it stops the spool from Turing on its own that would be great cause I hate a reel that turns on its own. As far and more sensitivity not sure. For me I get all my feel from my rod hand not my reel hand so that would not lean me towards going that direction.

I bought this double handle which is made by Gomexus, to temporarily put on my Ballistic 1000 because I lost the original handle. I bought it because the original handle is taking a LONG time to get here from Japan and I was desperate.

My thoughts on it are that it adds weight to the reel and I'm not crazy about that. When I opened it up, I was just shocked at the overall size of the damn thing. It measures over 4.5 inches in length, this is just too big for such a small reel. If it was 3.5 inches or so in length, I actually think I would really like it.

I paid about $36 for it...It seems to be made fairly well...The good news is that I should be receiving my replacement handle from Plat one day this week!
