I don’t know about mutants but they could have superior genes that allow them to get to huge sizes. I’m guessing that the fairly moderate climate allows them to grow year around and they have a plentiful food source, and that is why they get so big. Lakes can also have genetically distinct sub-populations of species of fish. The sub-populations May mix during parts of the year but during the spring they go back to their different spawning grounds. Hope this answers your questions a little.

The low fishing pressure has to help, also. Some of my local lakes used to produce nice fish, but the never-ending fishing pressure has left them a shadow of what they once were.
I think LedHed throws back most (if not all) of the big gills. In most of the country, they'd get thrown in the frying pan.
thnx Matt
"Lakes can also have genetically distinct sub-populations of species of fish." I'm sure that's what I see. I'm wondering if there is pure strain Coppernose left in LP.
Can all hybrids male/female breed?
I release about 98% of the fish I catch dbd. Keep some (mostly for friends) 8" to 9" - easiest to fillet and best tasting. 10"+ and females with eggs are released. Certain areas of this lake get pounded during the spawn. Fortunately they can't find them all - especially the big girls...
FYI LedHed, you're becoming fairly famous in north AL. I think I've shown about 1000 people the 2# bluegill in this thread. LOL
LOL FF
this year has been exceptional for the bigger fish
All hybrid males and females in the sunfish family can reproduce. Other hybrid species, like Hybrid Striped Bass, have a much tougher time reproducing, not because they can’t buy because their eggs take on the characteristics of one of the parents (Striped Bass eggs need to free float for miles to be viable). I’m sure there are other examples like this that I can’t think of right now.
