Thank you for your clarification. It's what most of us refer to as mono when discussing fishing line.

Nylon monofilament line is called "mono" because when it was introduced the most popular line was braided (dacron). Rather than a braid of several filaments, the new nylon line was just one filament - monofilament, which got shortened to mono in popular use.

However, since then, new lines made from fluorocarbon and ester (short for polyester) have been introduced. Both are also monofilament lines. So, technically, fluorocarbon and ester are "mono" lines. All nylon fishing lines are monofilament, but not all monofilament lines are nylon. When people refer to mono, it is generally understood that they mean nylon monofilament, but there is some room for misunderstanding, so people who want to eliminate that possibility of misunderstanding will refer to nylon monofilament as nylon rather than mono.

Ester and modern braid are both made from polyester. Dyneema and Spectra are brand names for particular formulations of polyester. For JDM lines, braid is often called PE (short for polyester). Ester and PE are both polyester, but one is a monofilament and the other is a multifilament braid.

Probably more information than anyone wanted.

    Chris,

I believe PE is made of polyethylene. Hence the near neutral buoyancy.

Excellent explanation Chris. I'm old enough to have used the dacron line many years ago. Thank you for your explanation.
