    Default New Rods

Today , I got the first of three new UL rods I’ve ordered .
    Sorry no expensive JDM’s .
Today the USPS worker threw my new rod on the front porch . I heard it hit the porch from upstairs while watching a fishing show on TV . Luckily I ordered from Swanson’s Bait and Tackle , knowing it would arrive safely packed in a hard cardboard tube .
The rod is a St. Croix Trout Series 4’10” UL. A short one . Sometimes I go back to my roots in UL and fish with short rods . I paired it up with a Shimano Symetre 500 loaded with Viscious 2# line .
If the thunderstorms let up today , I’ll drive up to the town pond and see if I can slim it .
The other two rods I have on order are at the other end as far as length go , I’ve ordered an UL 8’ Berkley Lightning Trout rod , and a light action 7’ Berkley Lightning Trout rod .
I still own a couple of old UL Lightning rods , five footers that have served me well , including one of the ones with the EVA handles that bends into the grip with almost every fish I catch with it .
I have nothing against JDM rods or the folks that love them . But , you don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy UL fishing . Gillchaser

Congrats! ITS NOT THE EQUIPMENT ITS HOW YOU USE THE EQUIPMENT. The high end rods Loomis,JDM really shine on our deep clear water lakes where we catch fish "crappie 20-50 ft deep.need the high end rods to feel the difference in a tree limb or a light biting crappie.Have fun good fishing.

Sounds like some good choices, Lightning series is a proven winner. What reels are you pairing with the 7’ & 8’ rods?
Pass the "Sportsman Baton" on before you're gone, promote values for others to hunt and fish upon.

I usually go with a bigger reel with a longer rod to help with the balance . Right now looking at a couple Daiwa Crossfire 3000’s I picked up . I’ll need to fill the spool about half way with some backing then finish filling with a couple hundred yards of 4# Silverthread or P-line .
I’ve got some one pound spools of BPS Excel line I picked up cheap I use for backing . A one pound spool of 4# Excel is 11,400 yards . Gillchaser
Edit: I went ahead and filled the Crossfire’s , one with 6# Excel and the other with 4# Excel . Excel use to be my go to line , because it was good cheap line and I could change it out as often as I felt it needed it .

Paired one of the Crossfires ( the one loaded with 4# Excel) with my 7’ Procyon UL this afternoon and took it to the town pond . I tied on a 1/80th woolybooger micro jig and added a small 3/4” weighted styrofoam ball float . Setup cast like a rocket .
I’d been casting, slow retrieving for about fifteen minutes and this little LM ate my jig . Fished for about an hour and half and this was all I could get to hit . Tried Trout Magnet for awhile and a 1” curlytail . Nothing .
BTW , earlier today , right after the thunderstorms went through , I fished the new St. Croix Trout 4’10” rod for a little over an hour and got skunked .
I think the five gallon bucket group have killed the town pond . I’m going to have to find another place to slim my rods .
The Crossfire/Procyon combo worked great together. I’m sure the Crossfire will work on the new Lightning Rods too. Gillchaser
