Haven't seen a bluegill on a bed that wouldn't take a hair jig tipped with a waxworm under a small bobber. Have you tried that?

interesting .....maybe slim jim time ? I hear that works ...and if they wont bite you get to snack till they do ....

Mostly used red worms on a cricket hook. Tried wax worm on same hook. I will try a hair jig next time.

Here in upstate NY to fish/play with the grandkids for the summer. Normally 1st week of May but later this yr. by 3 weeks. Got both boats running the 2nd week but because of weather they have not been wet yet. Fishing from banks at local SMALL lakes and state ponds were so/so first week out with nightcrawlers. Waxworms arrived and have been slaying them now. 2 places post spawn but the 3rd is just coming on. Strange cause they are not that far apart. Did manage 3 nice crappies last time out. One of the boats is going out next week depending on weather. Flyrods with ultra light reels spooled with yellow 6# test line. Glow in the dark ice jigs with slip bobbers works all summer long.

will try this weekend. I haven't been out.

I'm not an expert, but my input would be to make sure that once you've located the bedding area, back off far enough away that you can't see the fish and then let the area rest a few minutes before casting to them. I've sometimes had difficulty catching decent size fish when they can see me. Usually bedding males will bite well in my experience with the only exceptions being when I've been too close to them. Any bait or flashy lure seems to work for me on the beds with crickets, wax worms, and 1/32 or 1/64 oz jigs and spin beetles being my favorites.

use your long crappie pole and dipping any type jig does the trick, just drag it thru beds and that is usually enough to get all the big males you want or need.
