The possibility of a monster brown in swift current would prevent me from using an Area rod. Monster brown in a lake, yes, but not in current. I'd give you four choices ranging from $440 to $190: Tenryu Rayz Spectra RZS51LL, Tenryu Rayz RZ53UL, Shimano Trout One NS S53UL or Shimano Trout One NS S60UL if you want a slightly longer rod. There are lots of JDM rods for stream trout so you have many more choices than those four, but those are the ones that I know are good quality, I know will handle the lures and line you want to use, are available here in the US and are covered by a limited warranty that would not require you to ship a broken rod back to Japan.

I've spent a lot of time looking at the rods on your site, Chris. I do not care for rods shorter than 6', even in the kayak, so of those, I would only consider the 6' Shimano. I went with a 7' Blue Current this time. I guess it is an ajing rod, and will handle bigger fish better than a stream rod. As you go south on the 'hooch, it warms up and has some good size bass that also like a Rapala or trout magnet.

EDIT: Chris, I did buy some Ring Kick Tails and some Eurotackle Z-vibers.

As a general rule, I don't like using lures with treble hooks. I like them even less with really light line. A couple of years ago, however, I experimented with a very similar set up: light rod and small crankbaits for bass. I used braid. I forget the details, but it was something like 10/2 PowerPro. I didn't want to use 2-3# mono and have a bass break off with a crankbait (and an expensive one, at that) stuck to his face for the rest of his life. Braid prevented that.

If you set your drag light, I think you could do the same with a JDM rod.

If I replace the dual trebles with single hooks, does anyone have a recommendation as to the hook type and size? I notice on Chris' site he recommends a single barbless hook, with a horizontal eye. The river has a lot of trees in it and I think I could avoid snags as well as give the trout a better chance. I do keep a few stocker rainbows for the frying pan sometimes, never a limit (8), and I never keep a brown, brookie, or a big fish. I am more interested in not hurting trout - I could not care less about what fly fishermen who don't like spinning gear and treble hooks think of me. As if.

How about this? As to size, maybe go slightly bigger.

I gave my YB BC 71 TZ/Nano it’s first test run this morning. It definitely has more back bone that the MC TripleCross and Tict Icecube. I caught 30 bluegill in about 40 minutes this morning. They were bedding again on my home lake. It was a little over kill for the 6-8in bluegill that I was catching but it could still cast a 0.5g jig a mile with the Luvias and Ester line. Of all of the JDM rods that I have used so far, it has the most ability to turn fish. I did miss a few takes that I think the Icecube would have hooked up on. I think the extra fast tip probably contributed to this. This will make an excellent rod in a situation where you may tangle with something bigger. Can’t wait to give it a run an a Smallmouth stream in a couple of weeks!

Pictures of weapons and victims?

Alpha is the yb nano going to have more power/backbone than the 6’10 corto? I have yet to catch a large trout on my corto and I am a little worried about a 25” plus rainbow or brown in some current.

Only took one pic of the weapon and was trying to catch 30 in 30 minutes, so didn’t take pictures of fish. They weren’t very impressive anyway.
