I have frozen wax worms to use as they thaw in the winter for ice fishing. I doubt that would work in the summer heat though. I store mine in the fridge (tubs of 250) and sometimes they die without turning black towards the end . These seem to work almost as well as live ones .
If you are referring to pre - packaged ,I didn't know they done that .

I've never used the packaged waxworms, so I don't know how well they work. However, if I wanted to use a "packaged" bait, I'd buy some hotdogs. They're a great gill bait.

If you have a good pet store around you, they might have them. I buy all my bait at Petco!

I fish with them all of the time, dead or alive. I order 500 of them online from a company called Grubco. They come in the mail alive in about 2-3 days and stay alive for at least 2-3 weeks when I put them in the refrigerator. Panfish love them.

I have kept them alive in the garage refrigerator for up to five to seven weeks by adding a little sugar and fresh sawed chips once in a while. They are kept in an insulated bait puck. I take a small needle and heat it up using forceps to hold it. Then I will make about a dozen small air holes into the bait puck.
