    Default New combo

Got my first baitcaster combo today. I'm new to crappie but been bass fishing for a while and never had a baitcaster. Today I finally pulled the trigger and got a Lew's American Hero combo. I'm excited to use it and just as excited to hook my first crappie too!

I got it at academy. I basically repurposed a bass rod for crappie and this was to replace that. I'll post a pic shortly.

I've gotten a few back lashes but none I couldn't get out within a minute. I've got the breaks dialed in so doing better with it. Caught a few crappie and a bunch of bass with it the other day and I love it! It casts so smooth and accurate and is surprisingly sensitive.

What type of bait are you using? I’ve personally not had any good luck trying to use a baitcast with light crappie jigs

I was throwing a lipless crank bait. My dad was using a small squarebill the other day and caught some too. Honestly I didnt expect to catch crappie on the lipless but I'll take it!!

I catch a lot of crappie throwing large crank baits in the DT12 and 16 size in shad and craw colors. they are really good on points and rip rap. I caught a 14" crappie ripping a 3/4 oz Rapala 1 Knocker lip less crank bait last year also. Jerk baits and Rapala stick baits worked slow do really good right now in cold water also. Good thing is you can catch any fish in the lake on about any crank bait and have fun. Spray some line conditioner on your line and it will help also and have less memory. Congrats on your new combo.

I have braided line on it so not too worried about line memory.

I've got shad colored lipless and squarebill cranks I like to use for bass but i may use them even more now that i know crappie will take them!! I've heard of people catching catfish on crankbaits. Versatile lure!
