Always heard how mono line can be affected by UV rays over time. I am a big fan of mono and always will be. In the last month or so during the hot weather, I noticed my 25 lb high vis line was losing the high vis color after a week or so on the water. I have always used the same 25 lb line for years and will continue to do so. After seeing how the line faded so fast in the heat, and losing a big fish a couple days before, I decided to test it for break strength. I took a piece off one of the reels and checked it for bad spots before a tested it. I then took a new piece off a spool the same length. I put a hook on both lines with identical snell knots that I use catfishing and secured the hook ends in the same location. I then connected my digital scales on the other end. I was shocked at the results. The new line broke after 3 tests at an average of 34 lbs. The UV faded line broke after 3 tests at an average of 19 lbs. I know the co-polymers and braid will hold up better but I always liked the stretch mono gives me especially when a big fish makes a hard run right at the boat. I will continue to use mono on all my catfish reels and crappie reels. I will just change line out more often. When you notice your high vis line has faded alot, either strip it off until you get to good line or change it. Hope this keeps someone from loosing that big crappie or catfish in the future.
