    Default sandusky bay

Thinking of going to sandusky bay to fish for catfish, largemouth or whatever we could get to bite. We have a 16ft aluminum polar craft with a 50hp. Does the bay stay tame enough for a small aluminum boat?

The open bay can get rough but there are lots of protected areas. East and west harbors have lots of big crappies, gills perch and bass.

I have never fished Sandusky Bay for crappie, but am really interested in trying it this spring. I have a 17 ft bass tracker, and thought that either Sandusky Bay or West/East Harbor would be good. Can I just Drive my boat up and put in at either harbor and start fishing the harbors? Where is the best boat ramp to put in at Sandusky Bay for a boat my size? Sorry if these questions are elementary, I have just never put in a body of water that large, and I am really interested in giving it a try as the size of crappie up there really have me interested. Thanks!

Default Lake Erie, Sandusky bay, Sandusky river

Have never been to Lake Erie, Sandusky bay, or Sandusky river. Wanting to go this spring. Where would be a good place to start? Read a lot about east and west harbors. Is fishing in and around marina boats allowed? Google maps shows the harbors filled with boats. Is Sandusky river any good. Not looking for anyone’s specific spot, just a step in the right direction. Am new to forum, any help greatly appreciated.

Guys the bay can be a tricky place.
Plan your day by the wind. You do not want to have to cross the bay into the wind on your back to your ramp! It will beat the snot out of you! I have a 19' 5" Princecraft and its a l-o-n-g trek back that way if the waves have kicked up.
I recommend you buy a Fishing HotSpots map of Sandusky Bay. Its got all kinds of fishing spots and descriptions along with the avg. depths all around the bay.
My map is older and only shows one public launch ramp on the bay. Its in the city of Sandusky.
P.M. me if you want more info. to plan a trip. I have some friends who can better help you with more info.

There are at least 4 State run free ramps, one each on east and west harbor. Dempsey ramp on the north side of the bay and Catawba island ramp. East and West harbor offer the most protection. The whole area has tons of channel cats, lg.and sm.mouth bass, perch, bluegill and crappie.

Four public State ramps, that's great to hear.

I looked online and couldn't find any Sandusky Bay contour fishing maps offered any longer.

I have a Navionics boating app on my phone that shows contour lines that could help on your boat if your fishfinder doesn't have any mapping. What's been cool about it is you can go anywhere in the U.S. with it.

I don't know of any fishing apps that include contours, they may exist. I need to look for some.
