Default A little off topic! Shad

It seems like when the crappie fishing starts to get really good the shad start to run. Has anyone caught any shad yet or heard any reports?

I have been getting some first hand shad reports and it appears the runs are getting strong. The latest one was from a friend from the Fallmouth Flyfishers. He reported his friends first shad caught at the fall line on the Rapp. was March 14th and he caught 10 the next day. Fishing has improved since then. Other reports have been second hand but appear to be positive on a whole. Perhaps plan you outing accordingly.

Anybody know where to launch a kayak on the city side upriver of Ancarrows? I don't want to paddle up to the fall line past any moving boats. I think there is a kayak put-in under one of those bridges but not sure which bridge is which. I don't live in Richmond.

Wasabi, I don't know about the north shore or around the Lee Bridge, most west of the 3. (95, train tressle and Lee) But you can park under I-95 on the south side, Maury street exit and launch under the bridge. It is about a 100 yard carry/drag. Any boat up that high will only be idling.

Thanks. That might be closer than launching on the city side. Either way I at least have another option if plan A falls thru. Is that curvy trail what I would use? What’s at the end...a shore of riprap or a decent bank I can launch a kayak?

So parking under the bridge is safe to leave my truck there during daytime? I haven’t been down that way since Corker and I took Shoer shad fishing. Were you with us? I can’t remember.

I would say parking under the bridge is okay. Many do. Good traffic thru April. Yes, good launching area. Firm dirt bank meets rip rap under bridge. Easy smooth dirt to haul yak under bridge. Curvy trail is part of the Ancarrow park. It is historic with markers. “Slave Trail”. The Wall ( popular elbow to elbow fishing) is original rock port for commerce tradin, including humans for sale.

The dirt trail turns to paved walk/ Ike trail as it moves north, and inside the city flood wall. Rock hopping yields 1/8 -1/4 mile of shore fishing.
