    Default Local names

How did the name ring perch come about for what many call yellow perch? Also is this common in other areas?

I think the names are just common to different areas. We often refer to them as Raccon Perch at least in Va and NC. Other common names for yellow perch include American perch, coontail, lake perch, raccoon perch, ring-tail perch, ringed perch, and striped perch.

Thanks. Also does Va. outdoors still publish Sarah White note book? Then I assume Michael -?- does not work at Beaverdam swamp reservoir? She posted fishing reports all the time. I got to personal meet her last year at the lake and was very impressed. I told her she could be a professional outdoor righter. Perhaps she took my advice. To bad for some of us if she did. Dang it!!!

I called the ranger station at Beaverdam R. Fishing has been slow do to the cold weather. Not many out this week and the crappie are not in the cove near the ranger station to her knowledge. However they did OK fishing out in deeper water for them and some perch. Also they are not posting reports as in the past. I hope some locals can keep us posted as what is going on there.

This is interesting. I’ve always called them yellow perch, but heard guys here in va calling them ring perch. Haven’t heard of raccoon perch either! I was also schooled by a fellow jarhead I work with who is from Kentucky that the fish down here don’t “spawn”, they “go on bed.” I vaguely remember this from my years of living in the south.

We have another name for them but I can't print it here because its not politically correct.
