Default Sorry but far from a joke

Got a letter from the IRS last week saying my partner and i owe $840 because we haven't filed our taxes. $210/ month per partner. However, I did file on time. Sent it cklassified (about 5 bucks). Postal worker said someone would have to sign for it. Naturally I lost the receipt. That isn't what has me perturbed. It says in the letter that if I had questions call the number on first page-- 800-829-0115. I have called it at least 40 times and always get "Due to a large number of calls try again later or the next business day." Or go to Internal Revenue Service | An official website of the United States government. Nothing on that site offers any help and it is mainly a set of prerecorded messages none of which offer any help. I just went to the one for paying figuring that would be the best chance to talk to a live person. It said the wait was over an hour but i figured i should just wait. 45 minutes later they cut me off. We have a local irs office but not sure they are even open.

Hire a lawyer ! Was told I owed about a thousand more and penalty was about 500.00 . We paid it and six months later we got a refund . They did not ever refund penalty .

thanks for the replies. Got it straightened out today. It was for last year. I guess covid had the mails slowed down. Kicker is i am to0 pay the penalty and file to get it back which may take 6 months. That sucks but at least I can go fishing now without worrying about it. But talking to a living person required lots of phone and internet work. Even went by the local office but you need an appointment. Security gave me a card with a phone number to make an appointment but it led me on a circle that was never ending with one office telling me to go here then that office sent me there and that spot wasn't taking calls and sent me back to the first site. All suggested irs.gov which had nothing to assisst me other than sending me back to the first number. But I finally got a lady on another department that helped.

I hate when companies keep bouncing you around. Only takes one good employee that cares to handle the situation correctly. Glad it got straightened out.

Guberment at its finest. They are unreal. I’ve been fined $50 more than I’d like to admit for simply being a couple days late filing something even when I’ve owed zero. Why can’t they spend some effort to make small business owners lives easier. Oh wait I know, because they don’t have too, they are a monopoly.

Be patient guys. To be sure you all understand that it does take some time to "build back better"
I have noticed a definite difference in how difficult it has gotten to contact and/or get anything accomplished at any guberment office.

Many government offices are still work-from-home which basically means do nothing and get a check financed by the US taxpayer.

My sister in-law is a CPA. She has had to drive over three hours to personally deliver a single envelop that was due by a certain date because all the useless KY Dept of Revenue employees are at home and the mail only gets checked once a week. Mail gets checked once a week but if your paperwork happens to be late because of this, you still pay penalties. I don’t understand why we as taxpayers are putting up with this crap.
