    Default Squirrel Hunting

Season is almost here in Mississippi. I know most of yall fish during the Fall and Winter(I do too on warm Saturdays when the snakes are still slithering) but if you have any hardwoods over run with squirrels and you want to watch a good dog work let me know. I live in Madison, MS and mostly squirrel hunt WMA’s during deer season. Always looking for private tracts that I don’t have to worry about my dog getting shot. Here is a video of Mitt last weekend. I’ve started getting him in shape for October

I wish I lived closer to you. I would enjoy seeing the dog work. Would not care if I killed any squirrels or not. I used to love to squirrel hunt when I was a kid but we always gave them a way. Hard to find people who eat squirrels these days and I want kill something for the sake of killing.I hope you and your dog have a great season

When I was a kid squirrel camp used to be almost as big of a deal as deer camp. You don't hear of them anymore.

yeah we would all camp out. Probably half a dozen of us and bet on who killed the most squirrels. Only head shots counted. I miss that

I have found that to be the absolute truth! We killed around 300(I think) last year to Mitt. I went with at least 20 different people and I can only remember 1 guy keeping the 14 we killed that morning....the rest I cleaned and ate at my house. People look at my kids like they are crazy when they tell them that fried squirrel legs and biscuits are their favorite meal. We have it once a week once I start hunting. I also give my pastor a mess when he wants them.
And here is a secret most wildlife cooks already know...but never make a stew without squirrel meat and broth in it. It make a stew crazy flavorful.

Thanks! He really is a once in a lifetime dog. He was given to me as a 6 week old puppy bc no one would buy him. The 1st time I took him in the woods walking at 2 1/2 months old I like to have never found him. He just naturally knew how to hunt... I mean like a wild banchie running through the woods. At 4 months old he ran up on a wild squirrel and treed it. I started killing them to him at 6 months old. You have never seen a dog that takes killing squirrels so seriously..... he HATES them with a passion and wants to the world exterminated from them. He retrieves that dead squirrels back to me. He is not almost 6 years old now and seems to pick up a new trick every year. I know you may not believe me but come February I can prove it...... he know if there is more than 1 squirrel in a tree or not. It just started last year. I would kill the squirrel and he would run to over to retrieve it to me but once he smelled it up close he would run back to the tree and sitdown and start back treeing. And almost 100% of the time you would find the other squirrel. If its the only one there he will bring it back to me and then go look for another one. I know it seems hard to believe but its the gospel.

He's a natural. A man is extremely lucky if he knows someone that owned one in a lifetime.

Gonna do my best to make some videos this season. Trying to get my hands on a decent video camera.
