    Default Minnow Water

For those of you who dont keep minnows at home but buy them at the baitshop each outing I have a question. Obviously you don't expect the bait shop to fill up your big Engel Coolers or other larger bait buckets. Do you have some water already in the bait cooler? How do you treat it? Do you let it distill or put some kinda of additive in it? I have access to a larger Engel Bait Cooler that I plan to start using.

I expect water with my minnows, I consider it a package deal seeing how they need water to survive. If your talking a big 30 quart Engel it may be easier to carry a 5 gallon bucket into the baitshop. You could buy some Better Bait add a pinch to a couple gallons of tap water, carry a bucket in get your minnows with 3 or 4 gallons of water and put them in your cooler. If it's a 19 quart I wouldn't have any issues asking them to fill it up. I use a 5 gallon bucket and never had any problems with any baitshop giving me water. I've had to ask for more a couple of times sure, but it's rare.

I need enough water for them to make it to the lake. I put fresh lake water in my bucket. I see all these people using oxygen and ice and a pinch of the minnow stuff in a 109 quart ice chest but fresh water and a quiet bubbles pump works really good for me. I have a 5 gallon bucket with a styrofoam bucket liner inside that. I have my air pump underneath the trolling motor recess, so virtually no sound. I’ve got about 35 bucks in this set up and rarely have a minner die.

If you need water in a hurry and don't have time to let is set, keep you a RV water filter handy. I use one at home for my engel and bait tank. I run it through the filter and put the minnow straight in with no harm. I got this idea from Feelay on one of his post years ago

Nothing wrong with that, good idea beats toting an extra bucket around. Bet they do think of you a bit odd at first, lol. Only issue I see there is at the two local baitshops here you may get a squeamish bait girl / cashier that has to dip minners. I've had couple they would almost miss my big bucket when emptying the net. Give you heck of a count though, considering they don't wanna be fooling with them critters to begin with Minnow WaterMinnow Water
