remember the wildlife pens below the dam at Grenada ? Does not seem that long ago . Late 60's and early 70 's . We used to go out and pick up worms to sell on the dam to sell to the bait shop on the spillway , to buy ice cream / cokes . Could pick up 500 in no time in the trees down by the boat ramp below the dam . Bet Rees guide remembers . The pens had wildlife found in Mississippi , first deer I think I ever saw .

Didn't arrive until late 1978, so guess it was before my time as well. I do remember the old store / baitshop at the spillway and the marina at South Abutment with boat and jet ski rentals in the 80's thru early / mid 90's. Remember riding one of those stand up jet ski deals with the handle bar when I was about 8 or 9 at the marina out there, and walked them stairs countless times at the old spillway bait store. Never knew about the old wildlife pens, sounds pretty neat.

On Highway 51 going to Enid, right where you turn onto the dam road the old bait shop had a light on a pole about 40 ft high that was either green (open) or red(closed). They opened at 4:00 a.m. Light is still there or it was when I left the c.o.e. in 2010.

I was young when they were there but remember walking the trail and looking at the animals. Seems like it flooded there once and put some of the animals in a bad way, but that may be something I dreamed up. Definitely remember going to the old store and buying goodies. It was one of the few places my mom and dad would let me and my siblings go without their direct ocular scrutiny.

We would go by the ice house in Tupelo and buy blocks of ice and put them in milk cans wrapped with quilts to insulate (modern day Yeti at the time ). We have come a long ways since . Had one of the biggest motors on the Tombigbee at the time . 10 hp. No 9.9 then . First depth finder was a window weight tied on to with a rope . This was the introduction to an anchor . lol Fishing with my son yesterday got me to thinking about the old times . I have been blessed to be a son of an outdoors person and to live where fishing was a possibility(when it was raining or dark ).
