It's probably best if you stay on Lakeland drive, up near the dogwood mall area. Several hotels in that area, fairly safe, and not far from UMC.

There are some hotels that give a discount if you are going to UMMC for tests or surgery, we usually stay at the Fairfield Inn by Marriot, it's just off 55 and around all the eating joints. You will have to have a referral from the hospital to get the discount.

Anything on Lakeland Dr. will serve you well. Good area of town and conveniently located around food and anything else you may need. There is a Sleep Inn at Lakeland and Airport road that may be the closest. There are also some hotels just off the interstate down off of High Street at the fairgrounds. They may be a bit closer but, well, your close to downtown so lock everything up. Prices may be a bit better there though.
