    Default Yet another battery question....

I bought a 12 volt battery load tester. It clips to the posts, and first reads voltage. You then press the start button and it tests the battery under a load. Apparently, it doesn't work if the battery has over 13.1 volts. When I took them off the charger, couple batteries had 13.7 volts and one had 14.1 volts. All three are brand new batteries, group 31's. The tester worked ok after the voltage dropped down to 13.1, and they tested good. Is it normal for a battery to have that kind of voltage while it's on the charger? Thanks.

A charger normally charges the battery at 14 or around 14 volts. The same with the alternator on your car. Once you take the batteries off the charger and let them sit for a little while they will hold at or around 12-13 volts

Duck, if your going to load test always disconnect charger and let batteries cool about 30 minutes before testing. That will give them time to level out plus when load testing a warm battery you could have some gasses around the vent and if that load tester happens to spark it could explode.

Surface charge can be up to 14 volts. A fully charged 12 volt battery should be 12.6. Surface charge will cone off after batteries cool
