I used to do mine this way and it caught on fire and burnt up. Not saying its due to the wood tray and not dumping it but it did catch on fire and was trashed
Came up with a idea to get better smoke from my Master Built smoker! I load the tube with 3 or 4 pieces that i split off a hickory chunk that I use in my charcoal smoker. I then dump those into the smoker tray. Then I put 3 or 4 more sticks in the tube and slide it into the smoker but don't dump it. After a while the heat from below ignites the wood in the tube and it begins smoking also.I have yet to have a fire start and because the tube is above the element anyway, I have not seen any damage to the tube because the wood is burning in it slowly. When the wood in the tube gets about half way burned, I dump it into the tray below and load the tube again with some more small chunks! The test is ongoing but I have been doing this for a while and it works great for me.A richer, deeper smoke in the meat! Who doesn't want that? Here are a few pics!

Your having trouble with your smoke because of that decal. Need a Vikings decal on there
Couple more pics!I haven't had any probs using this method. I'm smoking at 260 degrees. This is the amount of wood I have been using.I jumped ship from the 49'ers to the Titans when Mempho was trying to get a NFL team there cray.Probly gonna get some high draft picks for sure. I loved the Vikings when Alan Page and THE PURPLE GANG with Tarkington were there.Sorry they never won a Super Bowl.
