    Default Penetrating oil test

A post recently made reminded me ofthis test I posted on iBoats several years ago. I was able to find itand thought I would share it here.

Machinist's Workshop magazine actuallytested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts withsignificant results.

They arranged a subjective test of allthe popular penetrants with the control being the torque required toremove the nut from a “scientifically rusted” environment.

    Here are the results

    Penetrating oil Average load
    None--------------------516 lbs
    WD-40------------------238 lbs
    PB Blaster--------------214 lbs
    Liquid Wrench---------127 lbs
    Kano Kroil--------------106 lbs
    ATF-Acetone mix------53 lbs*

    * The ATF-Acetone mix was a “homeBrew” of 50-50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone.

Thanks, will try. I just found the drain plug on my tranny and a quart or so should give me enough for a good sampling. lol

I can vouch that the Kano is good stuff. Worked in an industrial maintenance dept. for 35+ & we tried most all on the list. We used it by the case. Haven't tried the acetone mix though.

Been using the ATF acetone mix for a while. Starting using it when I was working on some old farm equipment and I can't say enough good about it. It has helped me bust bolts loose that I never would have thought would come loose. I've been told the acetone penetrates and the ATF lubes. Whatever it does it works.

So, how hazardous is the ATF-acetone mix?

There was an old home brew bore solvent that used ATF as well
