Default THE LEGACY OF A MAN remembering John Lewis

    THE LEGACY OF A MAN

Dedicated to the memory of Congressman John Lewis
    Written by Michael C. Carter
    July 18, 2020

    The legacy of a man
    Is written while he lives
    Is measured not in wealth
But how much inspiration he gives

    The legacy of a man
Knows the price he must pay
    To fight for our freedoms
To find a way to get in the way

    Facing humiliation, threats
    And degradation by the Klan
John was a giant in the movement
    Doing all that he can

Like C. T. Vivian and Dr. Joseph Lowery
He never gave up in spite of his fate
Dr. Martin King was his mentor
Preaching we must love and not hate

    The legacy of John Lewis
    Is Brave, courageous and bold
    We still have a dream
As long as his story is told

    From the freedom rides
    To those colored waiting rooms
    He marched for voting rights
For us and unborn babies in the wombs

We all still share in his dream
And we will never give up
    Till freedom for all
    Flows from America’s cup

Mike, I didn’t know much about Mr. Lewis until his death and while I differ from his political ideology I admire his courage to stand up for what most would see only as civil rights for African Americans but in fact was civil rights for all persons who call America home.

Your poem in memoriam is a fine tribute.

May he now Rest In Peace.

    Blessings, John
