I added some sand to my 100% clay and then added some rabbit manure. It made a whole lot of difference. I can till 2 or 3 day after a rain. Good luck.

It will just not stop raining long enough to till my garden Without mud clumps. Will tilling in sand break those up enough to drop seeds in? My soil is black dirt not clay.

Sand and spagnum (SP) peat moss does a good job of mellowing heavy soil.

Silverside also gather all the leaves, straw, grass clippings and any other organic stuff you can get a hold of. When your crops are up and started spread that between the rows. It will hold down weeds and compost right in between the rows. Everytime you till you will be incorporating it into the soil. After a few years you will notice a BIG difference in your soil.

One thing you have to watch for when bringing in sand is bringing in Nutsedge also.

I would add composted manure not sand. You may increase drainage with the sand but only down until the less permeable layer. If you add too much you will create a perched water table and the water will perc too fast and potentially wash your nutrients through. It might behave something like a golf green where the nutrients aren't held much in the soil.
Organic matter will lighten and "fluff" your soil and add nutrients. Sand just adds permeability.

I opted for pea gravel insted of sand. To till a depth of 5 inches I added 2 inches of the pea gravel. That really busted up the clumps and made for better seed planting.
Thanks everyone!
