    Default Hearing aids

I got a hearing test a few weeks ago by an audiologist. I knew I had high frequency hearing loss. I knew it was bad. I was correct. It is bad. Got to get up around 90 decibels on the upper half of my hearing range. I got fitted with hearing aids today.

I HATE THEM. They are driving me crazy. She said she started them out way softer than they needed to be but they're still driving me crazy. Any time I encounter a high pitched sound, it feels like somebody thumps me in the right ear drum.

How long does it take to get use to the dog gone contraptions?

I've been wearing them for almost 20 years and I feel lost without them. You are hearing sounds you have not heard in a long time and some things are disturbingly loud. Over time your brain will adjust and you will feel lost without them. One caveat though, you MUST wear them all the time except when sleeping. I had friends that would take them out if they thought things were too loud, like in a restaurant. They never were able to adapt to them because as soon as they felt uncomfortable out they came.
You have to make a commitment to learn to live with them or you are wasting your time and money.
I cannot wear ones that go over the ear. I knock them loose a dozen times a day so I only have the in the ear models and am comfortable with them. My hearing has gotten worse over the last few years and I have a new set due in later this month. I can only hope they have advanced enough that my hearing will improve with them.
Good luck with your new aids.

Thanks. Something isn't right with them. I've got to call tomorrow. I started getting sick to my stomach and took them out. That sensation went away within just a few minutes. I looked it up on Google and it said that was possible and said it had something to do with the pressure behind your ear drum.

I have serious sinus problems and my head stays plugged up all the time. Usually I can only wear one at a time or I get serious head aches from them. Mine have adjustments on them, push a button on aid for wind noise, high noise areas like restaurants, low noise so you can hear better and normal. Like search says once you get them adjusted then you have to wear them to get used to it. They make a big difference.

Thanks for the reply Charlie. I told them when I went in for my hearing test that my right ear stayed stopped up all the time. They checked it and said the pressure was fine. I told them before the test that they were going to tell me the pressure was good, but it isn't. After getting nauseous I looked up whether or not hearing aids could cause that and it said something about the pressure on the ear drum. I'm calling her tomorrow.

Just to share a couple of things from my 1st days with hearing aids many years ago. I got dressed for work in the dark, laced up my shoes and started to kitchen to start coffee. I stopped short about halfway down the hall because I heard a swishing sound in the quiet dark house. Another couple of steps, heard it again.
By the time I got to kitchen I had figured out it was my shoelaces swishing against my shoes. Probably been 15 years since I heard that sound.
I walked out on my porch (we lived on some acreage so no neighbors). It was raining softly and I could hear the rain falling on the leaves in the woods. What a peaceful, relaxing sound and one that had been absent for many years.
The 3rd memory involved a fishing trip with a box of crickets in the back floorboard. Never knew they were such noisy critters!!
You are missing a lot more than you realize. If you can't hear those sounds you don't know you're missing them.

Brad I lost most of my high freq hearing in the service working on jet engines. I got hearing aids from the VA a year and a half ago. I only wear mine half the time. i certainly take them out when working with things that make loud noise because i dont want to lose any of the hearing I have left. Lawnmower, skill saw, grinder, etc. I got the behind the ear type... I also have a wireless remote that I can make adjustments with. That was what the audiologist recommended. I like them they are a great help. Have your ears cleaned and wax removal before hearing test....if not they will set your hearing aids wrong. Then regular cleaning when needed. Anyway...good luck to ya and if you have any questions just PM me.

I'm with G. I have had mine (from the VA) for about 2 years. I only wear them when I NEED to hear something. If I am going to church or a lecture or something like that I will put mine in. Mine are the behind-the-ear type and can be controlled my an app on my IPhone. If I could not turn them down or off I would never wear them. They are tiring to wear for any length of time. I know it is because I hear EVERYTHING when I am using them. Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies. I don’t have them in today. My right eardrum is still sore from the sound hammering it last night. I called the audiologists office this morning and told them I wouldn’t wear them again until I saw her again. They made me an appointment for Monday.
