Sun Protection ?

I've been fishing for nearly 50 years along with working construction for over 45. During that time I've developed some skin cancer on my ears. All have been removed but I am still concerned about reoccurrence. What is a good hot weather hat that covers your ears and neck but still allows some air flow? Thanks, Tom

There are plenty of hat options, but nothing beats a buff. I've been wearing one for years.

If I were in your shoes, I'd use something like Banana Boat Sport 100spf and a wide brim straw hat (at a minimum).

Like DB4D .... I have faceshields/gaiters/buffs (whatever you call them) that I got from SA Co. I think I got them for about $2/ea (back several years ago). Their current sale offer is 5 for $15. I disagree with the buff approach. Been there, done that. Too hot for my comfort zone. I prefer using a quality sunscreen product such as Neutrogena "UltraSheer" Dry Touch, which is rated as being close to and SPF 100+. I put it on before heading out and it lasts me all day. I've had to start getting serious about sunscreen protection after having several skin cancers removed. None in the past two seasons of using this product.

I also wear fingerless sunscreen gloves. Several manufacturers out there. And a broad brimmed hat. All work fine.

Precisely why I got white buffs !! Changed over from the "Lawrence of Arabia" shield worn over a ball cap .... and now have an umbrella setup for those hot sunny days. And I also wear the "sun gloves". Might even see me wearing a boonie hat, in place of my ball cap. Whatever it takes to shield my neck, ears, face, and arms/hands. Also went from spf30 sunscreen to spf100 .... just to be on the safe side !!

Saw my dermatologist today. He said that, for a man of my age (54) who fishes a lot, my skin looked great.

I am bad at wearing sunscreen lotions and usually don't. I do use a wide brim hat always, though. I know alot of really good fisherman that swear the scent of sun screens is a real & instant bite killer. Anybody use a lotion that's " fish bite" freindly& won't repel them?

The hat is good, but it doesn't protect you from sunlight reflected off the water. That's why fishing is especially hard on your skin. (Skiers have the same problem with sunlight reflected off the snow.)

I put it on in the morning and then wash my hands thoroughly. It doesn't seem to affect my fishing.

Another option is just to cover up. (See buff video above.)
