Default Froe question from sippi man

My health may not allow me to split firewood with a maul or wedges this fall. Can I use a froe to split seasoned 10 inch red oak logs into quarters? Would it split as easy with the froe so I don't have to swing a heavy tool?

Kinda surprised that nobody from TN. has ever used a froe or cannot answer this question.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. If it will split off a shake it should split into quarters. Still looks like a lot of work. Think I'd just invest in a splitter.

Yes you do. They were used in the old days for splitting off slices of wood for making shake shingles for roofs. My grandad had one with a big wooden maul to hit it with. He could slice those off a precise as a table saw. Bet you got some Amish or Menonite folks up there that still use them.

Got my froe made by the blacksmith. Got a seasoned Dogwood trunk that I'm gonna get turned for the mallet and handle. Then I'll be ready to give these a try this fall at the cabin on Grenada. Cray- you should pm me about coming over to fish. I got a empty seat.

Just send me a PM when you get over there and we will find a way to make it happen. Just needs to cool off some.
