There is a gas platform just in federal waters just off Dauphin Island and it use to have 2 big flairs and you could catch all the King Mackerel you wanted during the end of Summer. I spent a year and a half as captain of the supply boat for that field.

You could see a lot of those rigs burning flares at night. I dropped a set of raybans down to the bottom of one of those rigs trying to tie a boat up. Wave smacked me in the face and away they went. I would take a kayak out and surf it in on the waves coming into sand Island on the south end. Had to fly out to one of the rigs to replace some bad wiring. The cook kept apologizing about not knowing anyone was coming out or he would have fixed a better meal. Those were some of the best hotdogs I have ever eaten.

Caught monster red snapper off those rigs. Send the bait to bottom quickly past the trigger fish in 100' depth of water. Best eating saltwater fish ever.

The wife and I love Dauphin Island! Been several times. Really nice place to go and get away every once and a while.
